For Families: Relaxed Discovery Days

Each holiday period we run a relaxed version of The Amelia Discovery Days, our free drop-in family activities. Created for those who prefer a more tranquil museum experience, including autistic and neurodiverse visitors, Relaxed Discovery Days offer families the chance to enjoy a sensory story, take part in craft activities and explore the temporary exhibition in a quiet session open only to participants. Designed to be accessible and inclusive, these sessions take place in a room off the main visitor route, allowing families to feel confident and comfortable in the space.

For visitors with visual impairments

Assistance dogs are welcome in all areas of the building.

Please note that the lighting in the Behind the Scenes, The Workroom and the Georgian Spa gallery are lower than in our other galleries.

The Amelia currently runs a monthly group for people who are blind or patially sighted. For more information please check out our Sensing Culture Group.

For D/deaf, deafened and hard of hearing visitors

Assistance dogs are welcome in all areas of the building.

Hearing loops are available for use during talks and tours. These are available from the Front Desk.

For visitors with autistic and neurodiverse conditions

In general, weekday mornings when we first open are the quietest times, although this can vary. For example, a school group might book an early visit. Please note, Baby Rhyme Time sessions lasting 30mins take place on Tuesdays at 10am and 11am and on Thursdays at 10am outside the Children’s Library on the ground floor. These are popular events, so they can be busy and loud. Lunch time is usually the busiest and nosiest time in the building.

If you find yourself needing a quiet space, you may wish to go upstairs to the library and galleries on the first floor, which are generally calmer and quieter.

To help you feel prepared for your visit, we invite you to download the following documents:

SEND Students and Groups

We are delighted to offer bespoke learning sessions to meet the needs of our local SEND schools and colleges. These include handling sessions, sensory sessions or a combination of both.

We work with SEND Specialist Colleges to support young people with additional needs gain confidence in the workplace by offering bespoke work experience opportunities. Working with our partner colleges, we also regularly run a programme called ‘Young Consultants’. This provides an opportunity for students to learn about the Amelia, while at the same time advising us on improvements to our programmes and site from their expert perspective.

We are always keen to collaborate with SEND schools and colleges to find out how we can best support your students. Do get in touch if you would like to discuss potential sessions, projects or collaborations. Email the Amelia Learning Team at learningattheamelia@TunbridgeWells.gov.uk
